Getting Started
A good place to start is by searching for a game you'll like, at Pay to Play MMORPGs or Free to Play MMORPGs. Go through the list, pick out which games you think you would enjoy, and visit their website. The best way to see if you like a game is by viewing more information about it. While many MMORPG games are based in a fantasy setting, you can also find games based in science fiction world. Be sure to try a game world with a setting that you already like for your first game.
Most MMORPG web sites have a Getting Started Section.
Things to look for:
- Races (elf, gnome, dwarf, and human are examples of races)
- Some games have a wide range of races for a wider audience, others have a small amount. In the end it all depends on what the player wants in their characters.
- Look at the character models, see if they are something you think you can deal with during countless hours of playing.
- In some games you can fully customize character features, body shape, skin color, eye color, length of nose, everything you can possibly imagine.
- Classes (wizard, warrior, and healer are examples of classes)
- Playing one class in one game doesn't mean you've played the same class in all other games. They can be very different in skills, and how they react in different situations.
- Start by choosing a class that suits you by what the brief description gives you on the game website.
- Take a look at the list of skills or spells that particular class has and determine if it's right for you.
- Screenshots
- See if the scenery and graphics are decent looking.
- Screenshots can be misleading, because gaming companies want to attract new clients so they sometimes pretty them up a little.
- Videos
- Game play, animation, and the flow of the game are important in choose the right game
- Controls
- Figure out which controls you like to use in order to play a game.
- Point to move is where you click anywhere on the game with your mouse to move.
- Keys to move is using either the up arrow or the w key in order to move forward.
Free Trials
Check to see if there's a Free Trials that you can download to try before you buy, because screen shots and videos that show game play are made by the developers to show the best qualities in the game. You'll get a more accurate feel for the game if you try it. Be aware that some games with high graphic content can have downloads of several gigabytes and may take more than a day to download if you don't have a fast connection.
Manual
Before jumping right in, don't forget to read the manual. All Mmorpgs either have a printed version, or an online version. So make sure to read the basics before entering into the world. This will save you a lot of time and stress trying to figure out what commands do what.
To Role Play or Not
Role play tends to be a little different then acting. An actor reviews the script and then enhances character element that make it the actor's own. This all depends on the player. If you like to act, or pretend you're a character in game then it may be for you.
Buy or Download
Once a selection has been made, and if you are purchasing a game it's time to figure out if you would like to do a digital download, purchase the game from a store, or order it online. Digital downloads are only good if you have a high speed connection, otherwise it may be time consuming and it could get very boring. Also, not all the games have digital downloads. Either purchasing the game online or visiting your local gaming store is the most common solution. If you're eager to just jump right into the game, and don't care about trying to find the best deal, then going straight to the store is the perfect method for you. Otherwise, you may be able to find some good deals for games online.
Character Creation
After selecting a game, and purchasing or downloading the game client it's time to create your character. Before you go and wonder off into the world of an MMORPG, it may be wise to follow a few guidelines, that are listed below.
Guidelines
Things to do
- Be polite
- Be friendly
- Help others when you're free and you feel like it
Things not to do
- Don't be rude
- Ask for money
- Asking for help more then 2 times without getting a response
- Try not to steal other people's monsters
Its called 'Kill Stealing' and is frowned upon by experienced players. And although its mostly a problem with older games (new games are designed to prevent it automatically), new players can do it accidentally and not realize it. If you see another player (who is not in your group or guild) fighting a monster and they don't look like they need help to stay alive then its best to just let them kill the monster by themselves so they can get all of the loot that the monster drops.
Picking a game
In addition to looking for games at Pay to Play MMORPGs or Free to Play MMORPGs you can also find lists of MMORPGS at websites like MostPopularMMORPG.com. This website does not have the depth of information that you will need to be a good player but it can give you an idea about what other games are out there and which games are most popular right now.
