This is a list of terms and acronyms that players in MMORPG's use.

2H: Two-Handed weapon

1HS/1HE: One-Handed Slash/Edged weapon (e.g., one-handed sword)

2HS/2HE: Two-Handed Slash/Edged weapon (e.g., two-handed sword)

1HB: One-Handed Blunt weapon

2HB: Two-Handed Blunt weapon

1HP: One-Handed Piercing weapon

2HP: Two-Handed Piercing weapon

1HPP/1H+: One Handed Poisoned weapon

2HPP/2H+: Two Handed Poisoned weapon

A

ADD: Additonal mob

Addon: UI enhancement

AF: Auto Follow

AFAIK: As Far As I Know

AFK: Away From Keyboard

AFW: Away From Window

Aggro: To obtain the attention of a mob. This could mean intentionally or not.

AH: Auction House

AKA: Also Known As

Alt: An "alternate" character played by some player, meaning either that it is not their "main" character, or that it is a character other than the one they are playing at the moment

AOE: Area Of Effect

Area: An attack that has an area of effect, "area attack"; or, a particular region of the virtual world, this usage being the same as zone

Areas place-name: Used to warn others that area attacks that could harm them are being used in place-name

ASAP: As soon as possible

ATM: At The Moment

B

BBIAB: Be Back In A Bit

BBL: Be Back Later

BCNU: Be seeing you

Bink: Teleport

BIO: Bathroom

BKA: Better Known As

Bork: Break

Borked: Broken

Bot: Program-controlled "player" character, used for farming and usually against MMORPG rules

Boxing: Playing more than one character on more than one computer at a time

BRB: Be Right Back

BRT: Be Right There

Buff: To cast a spell that increases target/parties attributes in a single aspect or a few and sometimes all

C

Camp: To wait in a certain area for spawns so that you may be first to kill or to log off

Caster: Spell casting character

CC: Crowd control

CD: Cooldown is the time between using the same skill again

Clan: An organized group of members, dedicated to helping each other out when needed; cf. Guild

Class: Character's type

CR: Corpse Retrieval

Crit: Critical hit, higher than average damage

CS: Counterspell, cancelling targets attack or preventing them from casting that spell or any of that sort for a given amount of time

Cya: See ya

D

DC: Disconnect

Debuff: The opposite of buff, referring to an effect that decreases attributes in an enemy mob or player

Ding: Gaining of a level

DKP: Dragon kill points, used to determined which player will get a specific item

D'oh / doh: Expression of frustration or dismay

DoT: Damage Over Time; refers to an effect that does a damage spread over time

DPS: Damage per second is a calculation that determines the relative damage per second a certain character or weapon does; also describes a playing style oriented toward brute force

Drood: Druid

Drop Rate: The rate at which an item drops, usually stated as a percentage

E

Emote: An action that allows a player to act out feelings with a "/" command, usually causes the character to do a motion or movement

End game: Quests, zones, or other activities designed for players who have reached the maximum level possible in a game

Epic: Piece of equipment/weapon that have greater value than others

EXP: Experience; also known as XP

Exploit: A hack which alters the gaming experience / world in some way that's not supposed to be

F

Faction: Your reputation with a race

Familiar: A pet, sometimes with a particular magical relationship to its owner

Farm: To constantly kill mobs/npc's in a certain area over and over again

FFA: Free For All; loot which anyone may take, usually in reference to loot on a corpse

Flub: Accidental sending of a message via the wrong method; mistell

FotM: Flavor of the Month; a class, item, or other playing strategy that has been discovered to be very effective and every minmaxer is flocking to use; usually a borderline exploit that will soon be nerfed, at which point every minmaxer] will move on to the next FotM

FTL: For The Lose; something which sucks

FTW: For The Win; something which rocks

G

Gank: When a higher level character kills a lower level, or several characters team to kill one, especially by surprise ("gang kill")

Gay: Disliked by the speaker, as in, "oh, they nerfed the DPS of my class, that's gay."

GG: Good Game or Good Going

Gimp / gimped: A character or item with poor stats/abilities/armor/weapons

GJ: Good job

GL: Guild Leader/Good luck

GM: Game Master

Gratz: Congratulations

Gtatz: Congratulations (fake typo)

Griefer: A player whose source of enjoyment in games is ruining other people's experience, most typically via PK

Grind: To repetitively kill mobs to gain level or currency

Group: To party up with other players

Guild: An organized group of members, dedicated to helping each other out when needed, or an in-game organization that may resemble a Class; cf. Clan

Guildie: Member of a guild

H

Hax / h4x: Hacks, exploits

Haxor / h4x0r: Hacker, one who uses exploits

H8: Hate

Hearth: Ability to teleport to one's home or inn

HoT: Heal over time

Hydra: When a person plays more than one account at a time

I

IMAO: In My Arrogant Opinion

IMHO: In My Humble Opinion

IMO: In My Opinion

Inc: Incoming

Instance: Area where a group/party may go to complete quests or kill bosses together; what makes a zone or area an instance is that a "version" of it is created specifically for your group, and others cannot normally enter your instance

IRL: In Real Life

J

Jam: Crowded chat/screen

Jooker: To confuse your enemy

K

K: Okay

Kit: Equipment

Kite: To drag a mob from his spawn area to another part of the world, avoiding melee combat

KOS: Kill On Sight

KS: Kill Stealing; attacking a mob that someone else has begun fighting in order to get the XP for yourself with less effort

KK: Okay

L

L8r: Later

Lag: When a persons screen is barely moving or not at all, delay in spells or abilities

LD: Link Dead

Leech: To gain XP or loot when not contributing

Less QQ more pewpew: Stop crying so much and do something

Level: A stage in a character's advancement, gained by XP; sometimes, an area/zone, particularly an instance

LFG: Looking For Group

LFF: Looking For Fellowship, used in LOTRO

LFM: Looking For More

Link dead: Having lost one's connection to the game server or the Internet in general

LMAO: Laughing my ass off

Loc: Location

LOL: Laugh Out Loud

LOM: Low On Mana

Loot: Items that are contained within a mob

Loot Whore: Someone focused only on loot/drops

LoS: Line of Sight

M

MA: Main Assist

Main: A player's primary character

Mana: Points used to cast spells and use certain abilities

Meat Shield: Tank; or someone who can take a lot of damage; or a character of any kind who can be used to soak up damage for you and whose well-being you do not care about

Meh: Expression of indifference or mild distaste

Melee: Close range combat, hand-to-hand

Minmax: To design one's character solely in order to get the best results out of game mechanics for some particular purpose, almost always combat, ignoring things like RP

ML: Master Looter

MMORPG: Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game

Mob: Monster or NPC meant for killing; probably from "mobile object"

MP: Mana or magic points

MT: Main Tank; or, Mistell

MUD: Multi-User Dungeon, Multi-User Dimension; precedessors of MMORPGs, usually free, volunteer-run, and text-based

Mule: An alt used to store or, more rarely, transport items or currency

N

Nah: No

Need before greed: If you need it need otherwise greed

Nerf / nerf-bat: When a character or item's stats/abilities are intentionally decreased, as by the game developers

Newbie: Someone without much knowledge to the game, a new player

Ninja: To take loot or items on purpose that were not intended for you, especially from a player character's corpse

NM: Never Mind; or, named NPC

Noob / n00b: Newbie

NPC: Non-Player Character; a character who is part of the game rather than being controlled by another player

Nuke: To repeatedly use high damage spells; or, a single extremely powerful effect; or, to erase a character and/or player's account

O

OIC: Oh, I see

OMG: Oh My God

OMW: On My Way

OOM: Out Of Mana

OOR: Out Of Range

O rly / orly: Oh, really?

OT: Off tank, backup for if MT were to die

Own: To completely overpower and overwhelm

P

Pally: Paladin class

Party: Group of characters

Patch: Game updates

Patch notes: What was affected in the updates

PC: Player Character

Pet: Player's companion, furry friend

Pewpew: Fighting, combat, effort

Phat lewt: Better than average loot

PK: Player Killing / Player Killer

PM: Private Message

Pop: Spawn

Port: Teleport

Pot: Potion

PL: Power Leveling, to level faster than normal

PQ: Party Quest

Proc: The percent a spell will hit

PST: Privately Send Text

PUG: Pick Up Group

Pull: Draw agro from

PvE: Player versus Enviroment

PvP: Player versus Player

PSW: Please Send Whisper

Pwn: To own, totally annihilate someone (fake typo)

Pwnt: Past tense and past participle of pwn (fake typo)

Q

Quest: A task to be performed, usually assigned by an NPC to a player, with XP and items often given as rewards

QFT: Quoted For Truth

QQ: Cry more (emoticon: pair of eyes with teardrops)

R

Raid: Multiple groups combined

Raid boss: High-end boss meant for many players to kill

Regen: Recovery of hitpoints/mana/power

Repop: Spawn

Reroll: To create a new character

Reset: Spawn

Respawn: Spawn

Rez: Resurrect

Rigged: Unfairly biased, possibly because of exploits

RL: Real life

RP: Role-playing

S

Shammy: Shaman class

Skelly: Skeleton mob

Skill: Abilities characters are capable of

Spam: Large amounts of text, especially on communication channels or from the combat messages of a large number of characters fighting; or, to repeat an action ("spam an attack"), especially in a fashion that creates text spam

Spawn: When a mob reappears after having been killed

Sploit: Exploit

Squishie: Cloth wearer

Srsly: Seriously

ST: Secondary tank

STFU: Shut The F Up (commonly followed by "noob")

T

T: Trade

T Storm: Thunder storm

Tank: One who keeps aggro and takes higher amounts of damage; a character oriented toward defenses and durability

TBH: To Be Honest

Teh: The (fake typo)

Tihs: This (fake typo)

TNL: Till next level

Toon: Character, usually player character

Track: To search for certain things using a spell

Train: To increase skills; or, to drag multiple mobs around in an uncontrollable fashion

Troll: One who engages in trolling

Trolling: Being intentionally inflammatory and insulting in order to get a reaction and attention from people

TS: Trade Skills or Team Speak

Twink: Highly geared individual for that level, or a player who is focused on minmaxing

U

Uber: Highly geared/superior

V

Vendor: An NPC that sells or buys

Vendor trash: Items not worth keeping, and better off selling to a vendor

Vent: Ventrillio

W

Whore: To use only one or two spells to defeat opponents; or, an extremely difficult mob; or to engage in some particular sort of behavior objected to by the speaker (cf. Loot Whore)

Wipe: When all members of a group or raid die

WooT: "wow, look at that loot", generic victory cheer. example: we killed the dragon, WOOT!

WTB: Want To Buy

WTC: Want To Craft

WTF: What The F? or occasionally Where The F?

WTM: Want To Make

WTS: Want To sell

WT: Wrong Tell

WTT: Want To Trade

X

XO: Exit out

XP: Experience, needed to gain a level

Y

Y: Yell

Ya rly / yarly: Yeah, really; ritual response to O rly

YHBT: You Have Been Trolled

YHBT, HAND: You Have Been Trolled, Have A Nice Day

Z

Zerging: An outnumbered amount of people rushing a base or opposing team

ZI: Zone in

ZOMG: OMG (fake typo)

Zone: A particular region of the virtual world; same as one usage of area
